  Becoming Readers and Writers Literacy and writing are the basis of education. Students must master these skills in order to move on with their education. Therefore, it is very important for children to learn how to read and write effectively and efficiently. One of the most important aspects of teaching young students how to read and write is to infuse them with a love for reading and writing. With this love for reading and writing students will have the correct motivation to continue learning. Without a strong literacy foundation children may have a very difficult time learning in the future. What I understood about the ELA standards and instruction is that there is a certain level of understanding and growth that every student is expected to reach in a certain amount of time. These standards are in place to enable educators to successfully assess where each student is holding. K-5 grade are expected to reach a certain level in the reading, writing, speaking/listening, and the language areas. Each of these ELA standards has a series of key features that are to be met.
