My student is a five year old who is in first grade. My student was able to read the text without much difficulty and had an accuracy rate of 91%. He did constantly check himself, which can be seen since he has a self-correction rate of 1:3. However, he did have a difficult time with some vowel pronunciations. In addition, he had a difficult time with the vowel blend of ‘ou’. I was impressed that as we went along if he had made a mistake on a word and I had helped him correct it the next time the word came along he was able to read it correctly. This showed me that he was really learning and by practicing, he will be able to master his reading. Mini Lesson: To address the needs of my student I would focus on practicing the vowel sounds and vowel blend sounds. These sounds are the foundation of all reading. In order for a child to learn how to read fluently, they must first master these skills. I would begin the lesson with a series of flashcards with vowel and vowel sound...

What surprised or interested you? What really interested me was how you can introduce literacy into each and every activity whether its playtime, writing time etc. What did you find that affirmed what you already knew or had been doing? I always knew how helpful shared reading is. It helps children of all levels to participate and gain from the reading. What new approaches or ideas will you try? I would definitely try to promote literacy and writing into all possible activities. Any activity the students take part in should be able to help their literacy and writing skills. What questions do you have? My only concern was although there are many Chinese students in the class why was so much emphasis put on the Chinese students and culture. ...

The student seems like a fluent reader. Here and there, he makes some mistakes and often self-corrects himself. He often makes tense or context mistakes that can be corrected through practice. Mistakes such as lived instead of live or whales instead of whale are more of a tense problem then of a reading problem. Therefore, the fluency is not perfect but is definitely great. The student had a great comprehension of the story he read. He did have some difficulty thinking of specific details however, with time he was able to come up with the necessary specific details in the story. He definitely comprehended the main idea and the details involved as well.

#1 Based on the Observational Checklist we can see that there are many Essential Components that are addressed during shared reading. The Oral language, phonological awareness, word identification/ phonics, fluency/ automaticity are all addressed during the shared reading and the lesson that came out of it as well. In addition the Physical Space, Techniques and Management, and the Tone and Atmosphere all promoted literacy during the shared reading time. This method of reading engages children of various levels of reading since the reading is dine together so they can be helped along and in addition, shared reading usually will consist of easy reading such as rhymes constant use of sight words and poems, which many children enjoy and find it easy to read. During the Phonics lesson, Ms. Perez helped children with their problem-solving skills by helping them along with their train of thought. By recognizing their error, she was able to aid them to the correct pronunciation. In addit...

The instructional plan sample was really well done. The learning activities directly reflected what the learning outcomes were meant to be. The key to a successful instructional plan is to ensure that the learning goals are correctly accomplished using the correct learning activities. The teacher used a variety of teaching methods. She used group work, peer work, and individual work. All these methods are there to ensure that every child is given a chance to learn properly and it helps the teacher correctly assess the student. Using a rubric is definitely a great way to assess students however, in addition, I would make sure to watch children throughout their peer and individual work to assess where they are holding. The instructional plan definitely did include learning theories since the teacher made sure to use various steps to help aid the students through their learning process. Slowly step by step the students were eased into their learning and finally they were able to master ...
