Lesson PLan
My student is a five year old who is in first grade. My
student was able to read the text without much difficulty and had an accuracy
rate of 91%. He did constantly check himself, which can be seen since he has a self-correction
rate of 1:3. However, he did have a difficult time with some vowel
pronunciations. In addition, he had a difficult time with the vowel blend of ‘ou’.
I was impressed that as we went along if he had made a mistake on a word and I
had helped him correct it the next time the word came along he was able to read
it correctly. This showed me that he was really learning and by practicing, he
will be able to master his reading.
Mini Lesson:
To address the needs of my student I would focus on
practicing the vowel sounds and vowel blend sounds. These sounds are the
foundation of all reading. In order for a child to learn how to read fluently,
they must first master these skills. I would begin the lesson with a series of
flashcards with vowel and vowel sounds. I would then practice them together with
the student. I would also make sure that the child fully pronounces each sound
with exaggeration. When children fully pronounce sounds, although it may be
slower than the norm it helps them remember the sounds. I would then ask my
student to help me write a series of words for each vowel sound and for each
vowel blend sound. For example for the vowel ‘A’ (long sound) hate, bake, way
etcetera. In addition, I would make a list for the various vowel blend sounds
for example, house, mouse, and louse. By doing this, I am giving the student a
feel of the sounds and the various words that have these sounds. I would then
give my student a book, which focuses on these skills, test his comprehension
of what was just taught, and assess based on his reading how much he processed
and what must be worked on next time.
