week 7 Assignment #3
1.
Explain
the three levels of words and how you can use word levels to decide which words
to teach.
Familiar words- that don’t have to be taught.
Frequent words-words that come
up often in texts and I different contexts which should be taught.
Highly technical words- which
would come up in history or science which should be left to the history and
science teachers to teach.
2.
How
do you teach your students to "chunk" words as a strategy for
decoding unfamiliar words? When do you provide this instruction?
A
great technique to use is chunking- to try to decode the word piece by piece.
Starting with the beginning then the end and if that doesn’t work trying with
the middle. This way students can try to understand the word piece by piece
eventually decoding the whole word. To help students learn this technique start
with sentence strips with the parts of the word, then go on to tell students to
use their fingers and finally they will learn to do it in their heads.
3.
Based
on Professor Allington's comments and the classroom
examples, what are some ways you might foster word study in your classroom?
Firstly, I would make sure to
constantly add new vocabulary in my lessons. This way students will be able add
to their word knowledge, and when words come up, they will recognize them.
Additionally I would teach them methods of decoding challenging word to help
them decode any hard words that ever come up this way they are not limited to
already learn words but they can decode any words that come up.
great reflection. You explained the different aspects taught in the video very clearly.
