Week 5 Assignment #2

      What surprised or interested you? 

   What really interested me was how you can introduce literacy into each and every activity whether its playtime, writing time etc.

       What did you find that affirmed what you already knew or had been doing? 

I    always knew how helpful shared reading is. It helps children of all levels to participate  and gain from the reading.

    What new approaches or ideas will you try?

I     would definitely try to promote literacy and writing into all possible activities. Any activity the students take part in should be able to help their literacy and writing skills.

       What questions do you have? 

      My only concern was although there are many Chinese students in the class why was so much emphasis put on the Chinese students and culture.                                                                    

    After watching the video, do you think differently about classroom practices you observed through field experience? 

I    I definitely saw a very systematic and experienced classroom. Using a systematic and experienced method of teaching is definitely beneficial for all students alike and it is definitely something to strive for.

      I was also concerned about that Faye! but i got the idea that it was not like that everyday and that usually she is pretty well balanced. at least I hope she is.

1.       Explain the three levels of words and how you can use word levels to decide which words to teach. Familiar words- that don’t  have to be taught. Frequent words-words that come up often in texts and I different contexts which should be taught. Highly technical words- which would come up in history or science which should be left to the history and science teachers to teach. 2.       How do you teach your students to "chunk" words as a strategy for decoding unfamiliar words? When do you provide this instruction? A great technique to use is chunking- to try to decode the word piece by piece.
